Just a few weeks ago, the Super League (Malaysia) came to an end with Selangor winning the league one week before curtain calls. Try as they did, Kelantan came in second as the Red Giants marched towards yet another league triumph.

Not to be forgotten are the newly promoted teams from Malaysia’s equivalent to England’s 2nd tier football leagued, the (often confused) Premier League or Liga Premier. This year’s winners, Felda United, have been granted the privilege of duking it out with the big boys in the Super League. Also promoted to the big league are the boys from Sabah.

With the success of our national squad in the SEA Games and more recently, the triumph during the international friendly against South Korea’s Olympic team, Malaysian football (we hope) could very well be making an exciting turnaround from our past sordid results.

In a nutshell, Malaysia’s top football league, the Super League has 14 teams competing in the 2010/2011 season. The 2nd tier football league is known as the Premier League and has 12 teams vying for a chance to be promoted to the Super League. Not many people know but we actually have a 3rd league, the FAM Malaysia Cup but that a story for another day.

Next, we’ll be taking a look at other domestic cup competitions in Malaysia.  So do look out for that.

Heard about Nike’s “The Chance”?

In short, it’s an opportunity for regular footballers (you know, like you and me) to play with the big boys i.e go pro! More info HERE.

Footballers young and old (at least 18 years old) have entered the competition and the trick is to get noticed by Nike and their talent scouts. One way is to  do that is to rack up as many Facebook fans as you can!

And we’re trying to do our part to help get a Malaysian noticed!

As part of Nike’s collaboration with “Red” to help raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, they’ve launched special red laces under the slogan “Lace Up, Save Lives”. 100% of the profits from the sale of these laces will be channeled to both the Global Fund and other soccer-based community programmes aimed at educating people about AIDS.

The two main personalities at the forefront of the initiative are U2’s Bono and Chelsea’s Didier Drogba,  netting twice against Arsenal in the special red laces. “It’s a big honour and pleasure for me to be linked with Bono and try to help him save some lives. AIDS and HIV is something that really destroyed Africa, and people don’t really realise how easy it is to save lives — only two pills a day, which is 40 cents.” says the African footballer.

Mia Hamm however, I know.

Hailing from Selma, Alabama, U.S.A, Mia Hamm is the most recognizable female football player in the history of American football a.k.a soccer. She’s done so much for the game back in the States in terms of raising the standards and heightening its visibility among America’s other more “traditional” sports.

More importantly, through Mia Hamm’s achievements in the sport, she has inspired a whole generation of young American women to dream big. In a time where women’s sports received very little attention, Mia thrived even at a young age, earning a spot in the US women’s national squad when she was only 15.

In college, she helped her team (University of North Carolina’s Tar Heels) to 4 NCAA championships (college sports is massive in the States) and won the women’s FIFA World Cup with her national team in 1991. She was 19.

She collected countless personal awards along the way and left nothing short of a legacy in the world of football. Her story though, is not without heartbreak. In 1997, she lost her adoptive brother, Garrett, to a rare blood disease called aplastic anemia. Following her tragic loss, she went on to set up the Mia Hamm Foundation, dedicated to aid in bone marrow research as well as to help the progress of women sports.

Her strength and will to persevere after the loss of a loved one spurned her further as an icon and an inspiration not only to women but to humanity.

I doubt that Mia Hamm is as well-known here compared to the States. Do you know anyone sportswomen closer to home that we should know about?

With the arrival of the Nike Mercurial Vapor V’s, these Nike Mercurial Vapor IV’s may seem a little out of date but rest assured, it takes no sheen off one of the most beautiful looking pair of football boots that Nike have come up with in the Mercurial Vapor line.  Out of this world cool.

It’s been a long overdue conclusion but we finally have it.

A little over 3 weeks ago, Find Futal Malaysia initiated a Manchester United competition title “How Red Is Your Heart?” because we wanted to find out who among Malaysian Manchester United fans is the biggest Red Devil in all the land. We wanted to know which of you “Old Trafford faithfuls” is the real deal.

And it was such an easy competition. Just 1) visit our Facebook page, 2) become a fan and 3) tell us why you are the biggest and baddest Manchester United fan.

And we are now pleased to announced the winner (again, finally)!

The winning entry came from Michael Yip and I’m sure many will agree.

How Red is My Heart? It’s So Red that I was willing to do anything for the team, die defending the pride that is Man Utd, even canceling my anniversary dinner (and I wasn’t sorry about it) with my loved one just because Man Utd is in town. …She now know not to tease the club in front of me cause I almost broke up with her because she said something I don’t like against Man Utd.

Stopped talking to my bro-in-law the day he told me he supported some other team (it’s been 4 years now since I last spoke to him).

Most recently, my other sister started dating an ex schoolmate of mine and I know which other Red team he supported. I’ve since started adding the word ANTI (with a permanent water proof marker) next to that club’s name that he has plastered around his car.

How Red is my heart? It’s red enough that none of my friends dared say anything bad about the club when I’m around.

While we strongly do not recommend cancelling any anniversary dinners,  Find Futsal Malaysia assistant editor, Ahmad Farouq, just could not deny Michael Yip the winning entry.
